Our Russian River Valley Zinfandel is “classic Zinfandel”, with cherry and briar, wild plum and bright berry flavors and a touch of pepper.
Picked at moderate brix, or sugar levels, the Russian River Valley Zin is leaner and tends toward the “claret” style: taut, lower-alcohol, food friendly, and spicy. The wine is barreled in a mix of American and French oak for 12 months.
We harvest this Zin late season, in very cool weather. During the early morning pick, some of the many tiny tree frogs that live in this vineyard are too cold to move, so they cling, hidden, to grape clusters. To the amusement of winemaker Kent Barthman and the crew at the crush pad, as the frogs warm up they leap off the sorting table and away to the nearby creekside.
Complex aromas of ripe plums, blueberries, and white pepper followed by flavors of cassis, ripe plum, and pleasant finish with hints of exotic spices.
